Travel:
Travel is so beautiful. Yes there are hard bits as there are with everything, you will be tired, maybe miss home and might get fed up of the hostels you stay in. I can tell you now though, the ratio of bad to good is 1:100000, or at least it was for me! Travel peels back that curtain of work, money, jealousy. Once you see the other side, you are just left in awe of how beautiful life is. The vibrancy of nature, the complexity of wildlife, the scale of huge landscapes. All of which make the images you see on your phone or TV look like a kid has drawn them. From the burning deep orange sunsets, to the crystal clear waters, travel is a way of life that allows you to see the greatness in the world.
Imagination Time:
It’s the first step you take when you get off that plane, the first breathe of new air. Being in a new, unknown country is such a weird but exhilarating feeling. Just like when you go on holiday and get off the plane, but this time, you might not be going back to your rainy old hometown for a good couple of weeks/months. The likeminded people you meet on these trips will stay in your memories forever, some may even stay in your life forever.
First Night
Your first night can be the most emotionally conflicting. Waves of longing to get back home smash against a wall of excitement and wonder for what you are going to experience. What will you experience? Well, it’s nothing short of a dream like journey, filled with vivid, new knowledge that you will never forget.
Remarkable cultures will fill your mind with questions and curiosity. Exciting opportunities to experience practises of betterment can become a common occurrence when you are in these unknown lands. Not only the culture will appease your mind, but the food offered is packed with intense fresh flavours that will question your taste buds with brilliant surprise.
The soft breaking of waves will ring in your ears as you lie on the silky sandy bed of nature. Quiet, dark nights will expose a new vast window, a world full of nothing but starlight. You will see back millions and millions of years as you stare through the cosmos to distant alien stars. The bright moon will fill your mind with comfort and calmness, as you continue to listen to the gentle crashing of the waves.
At this moment you may wonder how just a couple weeks ago, you were stuck in an office, in university or some other trap of normality and that all it took to break the cycle of the ordinary, was to take this leap of faith. Would you have thoughts of regret or thoughts of gratefulness to be alive in the world? To be experiencing the sweet glow of the universe, the gentle touch of sand and hearing the relaxing sound of the ocean, that can't be something you'd regret, surely?
Just Do It
I can tell you from my past experiences that once I travelled, I have been constantly thinking about the next time I can go back out. Planning where I would go, how much I would need, how long till I can depart my home country. It’s been a steady thought that keeps growing and growing until the day, far in the future, that I get off that plane, take that first step, breathe my first breath in a new country that will inspire the rest of my life’s decisions. I cannot wait for this. I hope you, whoever you are, can get to experience the emotions that I did because they are just incomparable with anything I have felt before.
Why am I telling you this?
I struggled to understand what I was missing in the world when I was younger. My routine was such a normal, comfortable process of waking up, going to work, coming home, going to the gym, coming home again for dinner, watching TV, going to sleep and then repeat.
I was lucky enough to be living at home, with a job that paid me a good salary, considering I was just 18 at the time. Yet in this comfort, there was also dissatisfaction. Doing the same thing every day was safe, it was easy and as mentioned, it was an extremely comfortable lifestyle. Yet, a small thing was eating away at me all that time...
I would constantly watch videos on TV or social media with titles of “Living On A Remote Island For A Week” or “Jet Ski Adventures” or “Blue Planet”. All of which were exploding with nature’s beauty and complexity. Watching youtubers such as YBS Youngbloods and videos of Bear Grylls surviving in the tropical islands gave me an increasing appetite for adventure. This created a massive desire in me to explore the world we lived in.
So, I saved up as much money as I could and found an apprenticeship that started at the other end of summer. Perfect. I had 6 months from when I left my job, to starting my new one.
As you might be able to guess, I went travelling in those 6 months. I’ll explain what I did in another post, but wow did I have the best time. I ended up spending £8,000 in 7 weeks. All that money I saved, gone. I regret not one, single, penny. It has changed my perspective on life, my self-confidence, and my personality in ways I couldn’t imagine. If the thought of that scares you, don’t be. When I say change, I mean in a extremely positive way (in my opinion). It might seem scary, but a lot of the time, you must battle past the fear, the nerves, and the anxiety, as it’s once you get to the top of the mountain that you get to see the view, not before.
